At Scioto Wellness Center in Hilliard, Ohio, individual therapy means working one-on-one with a licensed clinician who understands both addiction and mental health. Whether you are in recovery from substance use, managing anxiety treatment in Columbus, OH or depression treatment in Columbus, or working through trauma, our individual therapy sessions give you a private, focused space to do the work that group settings cannot always reach.
Our individual therapy services are available as a standalone option or as part of our Intensive Outpatient Program in Columbus (IOP) or Partial Hospitalization Program in Columbus (PHP). We serve clients from Columbus, Hilliard, Dublin, Grove City, Upper Arlington, and across Central Ohio.
Every client’s needs are different. Your individual therapy sessions are shaped around your specific situation — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
A typical course of individual therapy at Scioto Wellness includes:
Sessions are held in person at our Hilliard office, with telehealth options available for clients who need flexibility.
Our therapists specialize in the intersection of addiction and mental health. Individual therapy at Scioto Wellness is designed for people dealing with:
Substance Use and Addiction
Mental Health Conditions
Dual Diagnosis Many of our clients are managing both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Individual therapy is often the most effective setting for dual diagnosis work because it allows your therapist to address the relationship between the two conditions directly, without the constraints of a group format.
Our licensed clinicians use proven, evidence-based methods tailored to your needs:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) CBT helps you identify and change the thought patterns that drive addictive behavior, anxiety, and depression. It is one of the most researched and effective approaches for both substance use and mental health treatment.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) DBT teaches skills for managing intense emotions, reducing self-destructive behavior, and improving relationships. It is particularly effective for people with trauma histories, borderline personality traits, or chronic emotional instability.
Trauma-Informed Therapy Many people turn to substances as a way to cope with unresolved trauma. Our trauma-informed approach recognizes this connection and provides a safe, structured way to process traumatic experiences without retraumatization.
Motivational Interviewing For clients who are ambivalent about change or early in their recovery journey, motivational interviewing helps build internal motivation and clarify personal goals for treatment.
Individual therapy works alongside other levels of care at Scioto Wellness. Depending on where you are in your recovery, your therapist may recommend:
Your therapist coordinates with your full care team, including psychiatrists and group facilitators, so your treatment is cohesive, not fragmented.
Both individual and group therapy play a role in addiction and mental health recovery, but they serve different purposes and work best at different times.
Individual therapy is typically the better starting point when:
Group therapy complements individual therapy by adding peer accountability, shared perspective, and real-time social skills practice. Most clients at Scioto Wellness participate in both: group sessions for community and skill practice, individual sessions for the personal clinical work that groups cannot reach.
For dual diagnosis clients and anyone with a trauma history, we recommend beginning with individual therapy before or alongside group programming. This gives your therapist the context to support you safely as group work surfaces difficult material.
Scioto Wellness therapists are licensed professionals with specialized training in addiction and mental health treatment. Our clinical team includes Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), Licensed Independent Social Workers (LISWs), and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDCs).

Individual therapy is a private, one-on-one session between you and a licensed therapist. It allows you to explore personal issues, such as trauma, family dynamics, or co-occurring mental health conditions, in a way that group therapy cannot. At Scioto Wellness near Columbus, Ohio, most clients benefit from both: group therapy for peer support and accountability, and individual therapy for focused clinical work on the root causes of addiction.
Our licensed therapists use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), trauma-informed therapy, and motivational interviewing. Your therapist selects the approach, or combination of approaches, that fits your specific diagnosis, history, and goals.

Session frequency depends on where you are in treatment and what your clinical needs look like.
During IOP or PHP: Individual therapy sessions are scheduled alongside your group programming, typically once per week with your assigned clinician. Your therapist uses these sessions to go deeper on personal issues that come up in group, adjust your treatment plan, and monitor progress.
Standalone individual therapy: Most clients meet weekly (one 45-60 minute session per week). If you are managing moderate symptoms or in a stable phase of recovery, biweekly sessions may be clinically appropriate. Your therapist will make a recommendation after your initial assessment.
Scheduling around work and family: Sessions are scheduled in advance and coordinated around your availability. If your work schedule or family responsibilities change, your therapist can adjust the cadence. Telehealth is available and can be used in place of an in-person session when needed, including switching mid-treatment without interrupting care.
If you need to reschedule: We ask for advance notice when possible. Missing sessions without contact can disrupt treatment momentum, particularly in early recovery. Your care team will follow up if they do not hear from you, not to penalize but to make sure nothing has changed with your stability.
